'We are open-minded about it': Knights boss addresses Kalyn Ponga and Kurt Mann investigation image

Newcastle Knights director of football Peter Parr has spoken regarding the recent pub bathroom incident involving star fullback Kalyn Ponga and utility Kurt Mann.

Ponga is currently sidelined due to concussion and was filmed being escorted out of a toilet cubicle with Mann on the weekend.

Parr - who only began his role with Knights at the beginning of August - addressed the media on Tuesday morning.

“We’re aware of the video, we contacted the integrity unit," Parr said.

"They will now run the process and we will support them in that. That’s where it’s at right at the minute.

"We’ve spoken to [Ponga and Mann], but that will remain confidential at the moment until the integrity unit has run their process.

"The integrity unit will also speak with the players and establish all the facts, and we will make some decisions after that when we know exactly what happened."

Concerns have arisen regarding Ponga's current medical status, and whether drinking alcohol is ideal for concussion recovery.

Parr stated that the Queensland fullback was not banned from consuming alcohol, but the club will wait to learn more details from the investigation.

“I think that could be a concern – my knowledge is he has not been told by any of the medical staff that he couldn’t drink and we haven’t established yet exactly how much that he had," he said.

"That’s part of the process and once that’s finalised, I’m sure we can make some conclusions on that.

"Right at the moment, we are not making any decisions – we are open-minded about it."

Despite accepting that the incident was a poor look, Parr was firm in his stance that there has not necessarily been any wrongdoing.

“At the moment, I wouldn’t say it’s a great look – there’s no doubt about that," he said.

"All the facts haven’t been established yet, so let’s wait until the process is finished.

"Just because it’s not a good look, doesn’t straight away that someone has done anything wrong."

Parr also addressed concerns about drug use and explained that he doesn't believe illicit substances - in particular, cocaine - were part of the incident.

“I can’t control what other people assume. I’ve got an open mind on the whole situation, but the indication to me is that didn’t happen [doing cocaine]."

On Monday, Ponga's father Andre told News Corp that his son had been 'feeling sick' and Mann was simply looking after him.

“He made an exciting house purchase Saturday and celebrated with a few mates drinking," he said.

"Sick in the toilet and his mate went in to help him."
