Jordan McLean has signed a one-year contract extension to remain at the North Queensland Cowboys until at least the end of the 2023 season.

The front rower had one of his most successful campaigns to date, as he led the resurgent Cowboys to within a whisker of making a grand final.

McLean initially struggled to make an impact up north after signing a big-money deal to leave the Melbourne Storm in 2017 but has now well and truly established himself as a pivotal member of North Queensland’s pack.

He appeared to have put his injury troubles behind him by missing just four matches in the last two seasons.

However, he was robbed of a return to the representative stage when a calf issue ruled him out of making his State of Origin debut this year.

His selection for New South Wales capped an impressive resurgence from the 31-year-old who rolled back the years to when he was one of the most consistent forwards in the game.

After breaking onto the scene at the Storm and becoming an Australian representative and premiership-winner, McLean endured a tough spell in his career.

Although he has come out the other side to often be an unheralded player for the Cowboys across his five years at the club.

North Queensland’s General Manager of Football, Michael Luck, called the extension of the veteran an exciting move.

“It’s no coincidence our improved performances last season coincided with Jordan’s most consistent period on and off the field,” Luck said in a club statement.

“His experience and leadership have been invaluable in the development of our talented young playing group and we look forward to his continued influence helping lead our squad to another level of performance in 2023.”
