Greg Alexander has announced that he will be standing down as the NSW Blues' chief State of Origin advisor.

'Brandy' assumed the role in 2018 when Brad Fittler was appointed as head coach, with the side winning three of six Origin series during that period.

State of Origin: Greg Alexander to step down as Brad Fittler's NSW Blues advisor

"I spoke to Freddy last week and told him 2023 would be my final year," Alexander said on SEN’s Vossy and Brandy show on Friday morning.

"My time is done. After six years, I’ve got to say fantastic years, it’s over for me."

It is unclear who will fill the newly vacant advisor role, with Fittler's future as Blues coach also yet to be decided.

"We didn’t talk about who might do that role [in the future]," Alexander added.

"But after six years, and I’ve got to say six fantastic years, up and down, but that’s Origin, the rollercoaster, seductive as it is, to have another go.

"I’ve just decided that that’s enough.

"It’s been a massive part of my life for six years. But it’s a big commitment, and I’ve committed elsewhere."

Alexander also explained that the call to step down was not made in reaction to NSW's series loss this year.

"I think it was after [the series], when everything calmed down, after the [past personal] trip overseas, I just thought about it.

"And when you hesitate, when Freddie asked me 'are you good to go again?' ... It’s not a job that you hesitate on."

Will Brad Fittler coach the NSW Blues in Origin 2024?

After a disappointing series loss in 2023, Fittler now holds a 50 per cent match and series win record as Blues coach.

The 51-year-old is yet to be given a fresh contract to continue in his role.

However, Alexander did reveal that Fittler is set to meet with NSWRL on Friday to discuss his future.

According to reports in August, he is set to be given another year as coach despite two recent heavy series defeats to Queensland.
