'We just want to win': Dylan Edwards plays down chances of Penrith Panthers historic NRL four-peat image

Panthers fullback Dylan Edwards has played down Penrith's chances and ambitions for a 'four-peat', suggesting the desire is purely to win.

Having already made NRL history by completing a treble last year, they are in a great position to complete a scarcely believable fourth grand final win in a row after finishing second in the regular season.

However, Edwards told media on Tuesday it was not a primary focus for the Panthers.

"We just want to win," Edwards said.

"The four-peat is an opportunity we've got, but we just want to win as a club.

"We've put ourselves in a good position to be able to do that, [but] there's a big month of footy coming up [and] we just want to win."

It will also be the last finals series for some Penrith favourites, with Jarome Luai and James Fisher-Harris set to leave the foot of the mountains at the end of the year.

Edwards says a big motivation for the club is to send them off as winners once again.

"I think we owe it to them to send them out on a good note," Edwards said.

"[The grand final] is a few weeks away yet. We're going to do our best in this 80-90 minutes, however long it takes, to put ourselves in a better position.

"We definitely want to do them justice by sending them off on a good note."

Penrith will be favourites for their qualifying final against the Roosters at BlueBet Stadium, having a strong recent record over a Tricolours side smashed by injuries. But they haven't had it all their own way this season with injuries contributing to some surprise losses.

Edwards himself hasn't been immune from these, being kept out for several weeks during and after State of Origin due to a couple of injury issues.

Whilst Edwards has had some strapping on in recent games, he dismissed suggestions he was impacted by a niggle.

"It's been alright," he said.

"I've been looked after really well by our medical staff here in terms of rehab and that sort of thing.

"I've probably just been carrying on a little bit."

Another Penrith star ravaged by injuries this season is Nathan Cleary, who is returning from a shoulder injury this Friday.

Edwards insists the halfbacks injury problems haven't dented his spirit.

"He's always had a smile on his face, and he's been around the boys a lot, so everyone knows how diligent he is in his rehab and his preparation," he said.

"He wouldn't put himself out there if he didn't think he could get the job done."
