Newcastle Knights centre Dane Gagai will miss at least one month of action after receiving confirmation that he has fractured his cheekbone.

The incident occurred during his side's heavy loss to the Parramatta Eels on Sunday but was suspected as nothing more than a 'knock' at the time.

He is likely to return in time for his representative duties with the Queensland Origin team ahead of Game 1 in June.

"It was just a little knock, he didn't feel too much about it (sic)," Knights head of medical Craig Catterick said.

"In regards to concussion and all that, he was fine. Just a bit of soreness on his cheek.

"When he came in he had a bit of swelling so we sent him off for a scan."

The injury blow comes at an unfortunate time for the Knights, with an in-form Melbourne Storm their next opponents.

They will welcome Bellamy's side to McDonald Jones Stadium following the Storm's 70-10 demolition job of the New Zealand Warriors on Anzac Day.

To add to the Knights' woes, Hymel Hunt has also suffered the same facial injury as Gagai and is likely to be out of the side for at least six weeks.

The pair join a growing injury and suspension list in Newcastle, featuring players such as Mitchell Barnett, Dom Young, and Jirah Momoisea.
