Cronulla Sharks halfback Nicho Hynes has taken the outright lead in the Dally M Medal race for 2024.

He received six points for his Round 2 performance, with his team maintaining their perfect start to the new NRL campaign.

Elsewhere, Ryan Papenhuyzen and Zac Hosking received maximum points, while Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow earned five points for his hat-trick.

Kalyn Ponga surged to victory last season as the Newcastle talisman beat Shaun Johnson by just one point in a nail-biting count. 

Ponga finished with 56 votes in a revamped voting system, with an ineligible Scott Drinkwater finishing in third place with 50 votes.
