NRL contract news: Broncos veteran Corey Oates officially signs one-year extension image

Corey Oates will remain in Brisbane for at least one more season, with the veteran winger officially inking an extension with the club.

The 29-year-old has been a consistent fixture for the Broncos since making his debut a decade ago, scoring 118 tries in 201 games, as well as representing the Maroons on nine occasions.

Oates is the only remaining member from Brisbane's 2015 grand final side that lost to the Cowboys, and also survived the wooden spoon-winning season of 2020.

The metre-eating winger was limited to just nine appearance last season due to injury throughout, eventually losing his spot to Jesse Arthars and missing out on the narrow grand final defeat at the hands of Penrith.

Corey Oates re-signs with Brisbane Broncos for 2024 season

In a statement released on Tuesday, Broncos coach Kevin Walters praised the try-scoring machine and believes he will remain an important part of the powerhouse club's plans.

"Oatsey brings a heap of experience and he is one of the hardest wingers to stop in rugby league," he said.

“He has been really good for us over recent years, and he has fought back from some tough places which I am really proud of Oatesy for doing.

"We are really happy that Oatsey is staying at the club and we can’t wait to see what we can do together as a team in 2024.”

Oates isn't expected to feature for the Broncos in their full-strength lineup this season, but will add valuable experience to the outside back cartel that will include talented young guns Selwyn Cobbo and Deine Mariner.

At this stage, Oates' tenure at Red Hill doesn't appear likely to extend beyond 2024, but could turn things around if he manages to force his way back into the starting side under Walters.
