In its 115-year history, the NRL Grand Final has left Sydney just once.
And if one were to go by the rumours, there is a possibility that this could happen again.
During her conversation with Triple M Breakfast with Rosie, Wil & Daisy, Premier of Victoria Jacinta Allan spoke about the possibility of bringing rugby league’s biggest night to the MCG.
When asked about a potential pitch for the 2025 Grand Final, Premier Allan said, “I couldn’t agree more.”
“The second State of Origin was held at the MCG this year, there were 90,000 people attending. The biggest crowds that the NRL gets for their State of Origin matches are right here in Melbourne at the MCG.”
So, it’s no surprise that the clubs, the players, the fans, all want to see the NRL played at the MCG – the best stadium in the country – so of course, we’re up for having a conversation with the NRL!”
Premier Allan also emphasised that the MCG is the best place to host a game like the Grand Final and added that the fans will pack the venue, giving a great experience to players.
“Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia, and I’m not surprised that the NRL might be interested in bringing the Grand Final to Melbourne and we’re absolutely up for the discussion,” Allan said.

Since most clubs are based in Sydney, it makes sense that the city has always hosted the Grand Final. However in 2021, due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, the game was shifted to Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.
Based on how conversations move, the 2025 NRL Grand Final could have a new venue.
