One of the most publicised NRL contract concerns has come to an end, with the Brisbane Broncos reportedly agreeing to terms with star fullback Reece Walsh.
After a grand final appearance in 2023, the Broncos had a brutal 2024 season, one which saw them miss the top eight entirely, but the team was still staring down a massive payroll.
But ahead of the November 1 deadline that would allow Walsh to negotiate with rival clubs, the Broncos locked up their man until 2029 - on $1 million less than they originally anticipated.

Reece Walsh extends with Brisbane on team-friendly deal
Make no mistake, Reece Walsh will still be handsomely compensated for his services, after the young fullback reportedly signed a four-year, $5 million contract extension with Brisbane, which will him the team's highest paid player ever.
But according to NRL legend and Walsh's State of Origin coach Billy Slater, the young star left at least $1 million on the table to return to Brisbane, in a deal that will no doubt alleviate some of the stress Broncos officials were feeling over building a long term roster.
"I think it’s a great deal for the Broncos," Slater said on Channel 9’s Sunday Footy Show.
"I think it’s really good for Reece too. He’s close to his family, he’s settled in Brisbane.
"He could have got another $200k to 300k a year somewhere else, but he wants to play for the Broncos. I think it’s a great deal all round for everyone."
Walsh had a mixed bag season in 2024; he played all three State of Origin games starting at fullback for Queensland, but played just 14 of his team's 25 games, including missing the final two match-ups of the season with a fractured hand.
