Just one day after Joey Manu’s likely departure to rugby at the end of the year became publicised, the Sydney Roosters have announced the retention of fellow centre Billy Smith.
The 24-year-old, who finally managed to put his injury nightmares behind him last season to establish himself as an NRL regular, has signed a three-year extension.
Sydney Roosters re-sign Billy Smith on long-term contract
"I’ve often spoken about how grateful I am any chance I get to represent the Sydney Roosters and to know that I’m going to be here for at least another three years is something I’m stoked about," Smith said.

Smith made his debut for the Tricolours in 2019 and has since gone on to make 27 appearances in the NRL, with 15 of those coming in 2023.
"The club has always had a lot of belief in me, and I know that my best footy is still ahead of me," Smith added.
"I can’t wait for what’s to come and I’m looking forward to continuing to play my role for the team."
Smith will now ply his trade in the Roosters’ star-studded backline until at least the end of the 2027 campaign.
The centre will be hoping to build on a promising previous year after crossing for four tries and providing four assists in his most sustained run in the side in his career to date.
After debuting against rivals St George Illawarra in Round 23 five years ago, Smith has been consistently struck down by serious injuries as he managed to make just three appearances the following year and seven in 2022.
"He is Eastern Suburbs through and through, and no one can ever question his dedication to the team, or his resilience, so it’s great to have Billy locked in for another three years," head coach Trent Robinson said.
"This extension is testament to the hard work Billy puts in every day."
Sydney Roosters latest signing news
Smith’s re-signing comes during a busy period of contract negotiations between various players and the club.
The aforementioned Manu switch to rugby union was a bombshell and came hot on the heels of the reported retention of veteran Luke Keary on a one-year extension.
With Smith now locked in for another three years, Angus Crichton now stands as the most high-profile player not to have his future decided.
The New South Wales and Australia representative backrower is currently free to negotiate with rivals, as are the likes of Daniel Tupou and Terrell May.
