The biggest buy-in tournament at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) from the Las Vegas Strip was Event #40: $250,000 No-Limit Hold’em Super High Roller that attracted 69 entrants.

A $17,181,000 prize pool would pay the final 11 players, but all eyes were locked on the $5,293,556 first-place prize and prestigious WSOP bracelet.

With six players remaining, it was Alex Kulev leading ahead of WSOP bracelet winners Martin Kabrhel and Dan Smith before this hand played out.

Smith raised under the gun with pocket kings before Chris Brewer three-bet with pocket jacks from the cutoff. Artur Martirosyan was dealt pocket queens in the big blind and moved all in for $10,700,000. Smith responded by calling as Brewer contemplated calling all-in for his tournament life as the shortest stack of the final six.

Brewer made the extremely tough fold with pocket jacks, but it paid off as he would have been eliminated if he called. Martirosyan was at-risk with his inferior pair but turned a set of queens and doubled up.

The bad beat for Smith sent him tumbling down the leaderboard before he was eliminated in sixth place for $912,022 shortly after. Brewer and Martirosyan reached heads-up play, with Brewer eventually emerging victorious to win his first WSOP bracelet and the $5,293,556 first-place prize.
