Australian star Bernard Tomic has set his sights on cracking the ATP's top 10 as he seeks more consistency in 2016.

Tomic enjoyed a successful year on court in 2015, moving into the men's top 20 for the first time in his career.

The 23-year-old ended the season ranked a career-high 18th, boasting a 40-27 win-loss record and having defended his Claro Open crown in July.

But Tomic, who reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, is eyeing a place alongside Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal inside the top 10, though he knows he must go beyond winning ATP 250 events.

"I think I played very well throughout the whole year. I kept up the consistency which was really important," Tomic told a news conference.

"Now for 2016, I have to start strong and really play well in the Australian summer and after remain consistent like I was in 2015.

"I'd really love to get into the top 10. On paper it doesn't look so far away - six, seven or eight spots - but it is very difficult.

"So I need to start winning bigger titles to move into the top 10."

Tomic was speaking after joining up with the Indian Aces in the International Premier Tennis League, as a replacement for Nadal on Monday.

The maligned Aussie lost 6-3 to Philipp Kohlschreiber of the Japan Warriors.

Afterwards, he was questioned about countryman Nick Kyrgios and his on-court behaviour.

Kyrgios, 20, received a suspended ban for sledging French Open champion Stan Wawrinka at the Rogers Cup in August.

Tomic, no stranger to controversy, said: "I can understand what he is going through. I myself wasn't in the right headlines this year.

"Everyone has a different personality and character. But he is staying positive."
