What forced Jason Taylor to call Triple M? image

Taylor called into the Rush Hour show after Johns and Sterling criticised the Tigers' lacklustre performance in an 8-0 loss to the Cowboys on Saturday night.

Sterling had said: "There was no imagination from the Tigers. They didn’t play to win, they tried not to lose," while Johns said Wests had the balance wrong between defence and attack.

"I just caught the end of it and I know there's a lot of disappointed Tigers fans out there, so I thought I'd come on and answer some of your questions," Taylor began before defending his side's record this season.

"Last year we had 110 tries scored against us which was the worst in the competition and the year before we had 120 scored against us.

"We need to change the culture in regards to toughening up and being better defensively and over the last few weeks we went back to being that really ordinary defensive team we've been over the last few years.

"We've conceded fewer tries now than what we did at this stage last year.

"Although we lost the game on the weekend, to hold - albeit an average Cowboys side - to one try was a step in the right direction and that’s the path we’re on."

If the Tigers' defence was fairly solid on Saturday, the attack was anything but.

“It was ugly on the weekend, it was crap, our attack was crap and we’re better than that," Taylor said.

“But we defended in the fashion we need to defend and the challenge now is to do it again and again and again."

Johns asked Taylor about the right edge defence, where young half Mitchell Moses defends.

“We’ve got a young guy playing his first year of first grade down the right side and he’s trying hard every week," said Taylor in passionate defence of Moses.

“But he’s not getting that support that he needs from the forwards around him, not just the forward on the right but in the middle.

“As we develop and toughen up they’ll get better.

“We don’t have a better player at our club and I’m not going to drop Mitchell for a minute, he’s going to keep getting better."
