Defending champion Stan Wawrinka crushed Marsel Ilhan in the Australian Open first round on Tuesday.

The Swiss fourth seed, whose maiden grand slam success came at Melbourne Park a year ago, cruised to a 6-1 6-4 6-2 win.

It was the perfect return to Rod Laver Arena, the scene of his victory over Rafael Nadal in the decider in 2014.

Only lofty expectations were likely to trouble Wawrinka, but he was never under serious threat against the world number 100 from Turkey.

Any thoughts of Wawrinka crumbling were ended quickly, with the champion taking just 20 minutes to win the first set.

Wawrinka forced Ilhan onto the back foot and into 14 errors, winning most of his points quickly.

That trend continued into the second set, when one break of serve was enough for Wawrinka.

Wawrinka broke serve twice in the third set and completed the job with a serve-and-volley, spending just one hour 29 minutes on court.
