Wahab Riaz and Shane Watson were handed fines, after the International Cricket Council (ICC) ruled the pair breached the code of conduct in the Cricket World Cup quarter-finals.

Australia's Watson and Pakistan's Wahab were embroiled in a pulsating battle in the tournament co-hosts' six-wicket win in Adelaide on Saturday.

But the ICC ruled the pair overstepped the line in the 33rd over - with Australia on the brink of victory at that point - with Watson fined 15 per cent of his match fee, and Wahab sanctioned 50 per cent.

"The incident happened in the 33rd over of Australia's innings when Watson ignored the umpires' instructions and verbally engaged with Wahab, who, at the end of the over, followed through towards the batsman and used aggressive and abusive language," an ICC statement read.

Watson was alleged to have acted "contrary to the spirit of the game", while the Pakistani quick reportedly used "language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting".

Earlier, Watson negotiated an aggressive spell from Wahab, who should have had the all-rounder dismissed for four - with Rahat Ali dropping a simple catch at fine leg.

Watson went on to make an unbeaten 64, to steer Australia to the semi-finals.
