South Africa paceman Vernon Philander has been ruled out of his team's Cricket World Cup clash with West Indies on Friday.

Philander, 29, strained his hamstring in South Africa's 130-run loss to India on Sunday, bowling just four overs in Melbourne.

He will miss South Africa's meeting with West Indies in Sydney on Friday and may struggle to be fit to face Ireland on March 3.

Proteas team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee confirmed the injury in a statement on Tuesday.

"Vernon sustained a grade one hamstring strain which was confirmed by the scans done in Sydney yesterday afternoon," he said.

"The recovery period for a hamstring strain normally takes a week to 10 days which makes him unavailable for the match against the West Indies in Sydney on Friday."

Moosajee said Philander would be given every chance to prove his fitness for the clash against Ireland in Canberra.

"The Ireland match, as we speak, is eight days away,” he said.

“With the recovery period being a week to 10 days, we have to give him every opportunity to make sure that he can be available.

"At the same time we don’t want to be foolish by taking shortcuts, we will go through the usual treatment protocols and the return-to-play protocols.

"If he passes all the fitness tests and is symptom free going into the Ireland game he may play but at this stage it is too early to tell."

South Africa's loss to India left them with a 1-1 win-loss record.
