A total of 17 FBS teams survived September with an undefeated record heading into October.

So, what does the outlook hold for the second month of the season? Sporting News takes a closer look at every unbeaten team's October forecast (in alphabetical order), including the biggest hurdle to staying unbeaten.

Remember, the first set of College Football Rankings will be released on Oct. 31. Stay on this list of unbeatens, and chances are you'll like where they'll be ranked when they do come out.

MORE: Alabama-Clemson III seems an inevitability

Alabama (5-0)

October outlook: at Texas A&M, vs. Arkansas, vs. Tennessee, Bye

Biggest hurdle: Complacency. The Crimson Tide have found a new, terrifying level in SEC play, and they face three teams with coaches on the hot seat. Pressed for which game could get interesting, it's the road trip to Texas A&M.

Central Florida (3-0)

October outlook: at Cincinnati, vs. East Carolina, at Navy, vs. Austin Peay

Biggest hurdle: Central Florida. Scott Frost and the Golden Knights keep rolling, and they made a statement with a 40-13 victory against Memphis on Saturday.

Clemson (5-0)

October outlook: vs. Wake Forest, at Syracuse, Bye, vs. Georgia Tech

Biggest hurdle: Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons are more competitive than usual, and they could catch the Tigers on a letdown like Boston College did. Still, the Tigers will get through this unbeaten provided they keep their focus.

Georgia (5-0)

October outlook: at Vanderbilt, vs. Missouri, Bye, vs. Florida

Biggest hurdle: Florida. There's no reason the Bulldogs shouldn't be 7-0 when they match up with the Gators. The SEC East more than likely will be on the line when they meet.

Miami (Fla.) (3-0)

October outlook: at Florida State, vs. Georgia Tech, vs. Syracuse, at North Carolina

Biggest hurdle: Florida State. We can't project past that for the Hurricanes, who have lost the last seven in the series and travel to Doak Campbell Stadium.

AL-KHATEEB: Ed Orgeron's head coach struggles haven't disappeared

Michigan (4-0)

October outlook: vs. Michigan State, at Indiana, at Penn State, vs. Rutgers

Biggest hurdle: Penn State. The Wolverines can't overlook a rivalry game against the Spartans or a trap game against the Hoosiers, but Michigan has a championship-caliber defense. Which quarterback — Wilton Speight or John O'Korn — will lead Michigan into this stretch? That's the big question.

Navy (4-0)

October outlook: vs. Air Force, at Memphis, vs. UCF, Bye

Biggest hurdle: UCF. The Midshipmen can run the ball on anybody, and they have a chance to emerge as that Group of 5 buster with a tough month. That game against UCF could easily be a battle of unbeatens.

Oklahoma (4-0)

October outlook: vs. Iowa State, vs. Texas, at Kansas State, vs. Texas Tech

Biggest hurdle: The Red River Showdown. It goes by many names, but this is the first chance for Lincoln Riley and Tom Herman to make an impression. Expect a heated, down-to-the-wire contest at the Cotton Bowl.

Penn State (5-0)

October outlook: at Northwestern, Bye, vs. Michigan, at Ohio State

Biggest hurdle: Michigan/Ohio State. That's the two-week hurdle standing between the defending Big Ten champions and a playoff berth. The Nittany Lions should be 6-0 when they face off against Michigan, and that's the best game in October.

San Diego State (5-0)

October outlook: at UNLV, vs. Boise State, vs. Fresno State, at Hawaii

Biggest hurdle: Boise State. The Aztecs are enjoying a ride that could possibly land them in a New Year's Day Six bowl, but they have to take care of the Broncos to get there.

BENDER: Georgia serves notice to SEC

South Florida (5-0)

October outlook: Bye, vs. Cincinnati, at Tulane, vs. Houston

Biggest hurdle: Houston. At least that game is at home, and we can't wait to see Quinton Flowers and Ed Oliver on the same field either. The Bulls, however, have looked the part as leader of the Group of 5 so far in Charlie Strong's first season.

TCU (4-0)

October outlook: vs. West Virginia, at Kansas State, vs. Kansas, at Iowa State

Biggest hurdle: West Virginia. The Mountaineers can push the Horned Frogs with their offense, and the following week in Manhattan won't be easy. Still, the Horned Frogs have a reasonable look at 8-0 heading into November.

Utah (4-0)

October outlook. vs. Stanford, at USC, vs. Arizona State, at Oregon

Biggest hurdle: Stanford/USC. If the Utes find a way to beat the Cardinal and the Trojans, then they will be in the driver's seat in the Pac-12 South.

UTSA (3-0)

October outlook: vs. Southern Miss, at North Texas, vs. Rice, at UTEP

Biggest hurdle: Each week. The Roadrunners finished 3-1 against those teams last year, the lone loss a five-OT thriller against UTEP. Quarterback Dalton Sturm will attract more attention if UTSA keeps rolling.

Washington (5-0)

October outlook: vs. Cal, at Arizona State, BYE, vs. UCLA

Biggest hurdle: Arizona State. That's a tough road game, and the Sun Devils already beat Oregon this season. Still, it's hard to picture the Huskies at anything but 8-0 heading into a brutal proving ground in November.

BENDER: Butch Jones' hot seat isn't Tennessee's biggest problem

Washington State (5-0)

October outlook: at Oregon, at Cal, vs. Colorado, at Arizona

Biggest hurdle: Oregon. We'll see how the Cougars handle success and a much higher ranking at Autzen Stadium next week. Washington State won a 45-38 shootout there in 2015, and this figures to be the same type of game.

Wisconsin (4-0)

October outlook: at Nebraska, vs. Purdue, vs. Maryland, at Illinois

Biggest hurdle: Nebraska. Or complacency. The Badgers have a chance to roar into November, which is a significantly tougher stretch of games. Don't be surprised if Wisconsin is the only unbeaten Big Ten left at that point.
