More: Is the shoulder charge banned or not? l Kane Evans' HUGE hit on Kasiano l Bring back the shoulder charge, say NRL stars
In a discussion about forwards and shoulder charges in the wake of Kane Evans' huge hit on Sam Kasiano, the 30-year-old St George playmaker was asked what makes a good front-rower.
“You have to be a little bit different to play in the front row,” he started.
“You need to have a bit of a screw loose…you do!”
“There was a part of that (Roosters v Bulldogs) game when Kasiano gave a bit of a slap to Jared (Waerea-Hargreaves) and he doesn’t take no backwards step – he gave him a bigger slap back!
“There’s something about them…they’re not all there.”
Possibly sensing he was digging himself into a hole, Marshall later explained his comments.
“They take that battle personally, and they make it a competition to beat that guy opposite them,” he said.
“And if they get beaten, they take it hard and they take it personal. Because they’re so macho and they’ve got that persona like ‘I’m the tough guy’!”
Fellow guest Michael Ennis agreed, saying you can tell the good front-rowers from the great ones quite easily.
“You can sense it with the good ones,” he said.
“There’s good front rowers and then there’s real good ones, and I reckon the ones that really take it personally about the bloke next door are the ones you really love playing behind.
“James (Graham) is one of those. Paul Gallen is like that and I’d imagine Jared is like that.
He’d have looked at the Bulldogs' forward pack and the size of them and he’d have just gone, ‘right, tonight’s the night.’”
