New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor fell just 10 runs short of a triple century in the second Test against Australia.

Taylor made the highest score by a visiting batsman in Australia as he fell for 290 on day four of the second Test in Perth.

The right-hander hit 43 boundaries in his innings at the WACA as New Zealand made 624 in response to the hosts' 9-559 declared.

Taylor had looked set to be just the second player to make 300 against Australia, joining Len Hutton (364 in 1938).

But he was out chasing quick runs, caught by substitute fielder Jonathan Wells at deep square leg after sweeping Nathan Lyon.

Instead, he broke West Indies great Brian Lara's record of 277 made against Australia in 1993 as the top score by a visiting batsman.

It was the fifth highest Test score in Australia, behind Matthew Hayden (380), Michael Clarke (329 not out), Bob Cowper (307) and Don Bradman (299 not out).
