Tiger Woods and former Tar Heels basketball star Phil Ford were among mourners at Friday's visitation, according to The News & Observer of Raleigh. He worked in television in the city before finding fame at ESPN.
“When you saw Stuart on TV, he was still the guy I knew in undergrad," Kevin Christian told The News & Observer on Friday. "It was like he was there in my living room. He was still that guy.”
Christian, a 1990 graduate of North Carolina State University, first met Scott when he visited a fraternity of which both were members.
Scott grew to national prominence as an anchor of Sports Center. He brought down the house in July at the ESPYs after winning the Jimmy V. Perseverance Award.
"When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer," he said. "You beat cancer by how you live."
Saturday's funeral service was private.
He is survived by his two teenage daughters, his parents and three siblings.
