Jordan Turner missed a last-gasp conversion attempt as St Helens suffered their first loss of the Super League season with a 24-22 defeat at Hull KR on Friday.
Keiron Cunningham's men had won from six from six going into their trip to Hull but were undone by the hosts, thanks, in part, to two superb length-of-the-field tries from Albert Kelly in the first half.
Despite that double, the hosts led just 16-12 at the break but a Kieran Dixon try and two Josh Mantellato penalties in the second half looked to have done enough to seal maximum points.
However, Louis McCarthy-Scarsbrook crossed to narrow the gap to six points before Turner crossed in the corner in the final minute, with the try allowed to stand in spite of suspicion of a forward pass in the build-up.
Yet Turner could not add the extras, missing the conversion attempt as the hooter sounded to preserve victory for Hull KR.
There were no such problems for last year's runners-up Wigan Warriors, who ran-in nine tries in a 52-10 demolition of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
Centre Anthony Gelling crossed for a hat-trick for Wigan, with Liam Farrell and Dom Manfredi adding doubles.
Huddersfield Giants leapfrogged Warrington Wolves into third place with a 29-10 away victory at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, winger Aaron Murphy the star for the visitors with a brace.
Elsewhere, Castleford Rigers beat Hull FC 20-14.
