West Indies all-rounder Darren Sammy urged his team to quickly move on from their four-wicket loss to Ireland at the Cricket World Cup.

Sammy (89) and Lendl Simmons (102) had helped the West Indies recover from 87-5 to make 304-7 at Saxton Oval in Nelson on Monday.

But Ireland were dominant from the outset in their chase as Paul Stirling (92), Ed Joyce (84) and Niall O'Brien (79 not out) led them to victory with 25 balls remaining.

Sammy said the West Indies needed to forget about the loss, maintaining hope they can reach the quarter-finals.

"If we continue to play like that, we won't be here for long, for sure," he told a media conference.

"So we still believe that the World Cup is not just one game. You win four out of five matches or sometimes even four out of six, and then you can still get into the quarters.

"So, yeah, we're not going to keep our heads down, but we still believe we could make it into the top four in this group [Pool B]."

The Windies' bowlers had no answers during Ireland's chase, with Kemar Roach (0-52 off six), Jerome Taylor (3-71 off 8.5) and Sammy (0-25 off three) particularly expensive.

Sammy said the pitch got better to bat on as the day went on, but still rued their bowling performance.

"We've not been playing the brand of cricket that allows us to win matches, and to recover from 80 to score 300, we were in for a chance, but we didn't start well," he added.

"Our bowlers have been going for some sticks over the last few games and today was no different against an experienced Irish team where you know they had a game plan and they stuck to it.

"So we have to dust ourselves off and begin against Pakistan next."

The International Cricket Council later confirmed Sammy had been fined 30 per cent of his match fee for using inappropriate language after playing a shot in the 34th over of the defeat.
