Defending hurdles champion, Sally Pearson has been ruled out of the Rio games after tearing her hamstring in training.

The injury setback is the latest of many in what was a troublesome preparation period for Pearson, in which she broke her wrist and suffered achilles tendon problems.

Pearson's form has been below par of late - three average results in Europe earlier this month saw her return to Australia to hone in on her fitness.

Having won gold in the 110m hurdles in London in 2012, the Aussie wasn't favoured to repeat such heroics this year.

But who knows what might have transpired? No-one expected her to notch silver in Beijing.

The 29-year-old is expected to return in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
