Revealed: The NFL changes that could make Jarryd Hayne a superstar image

The NFL could one day ban the use of helmets, according to the chairman of the league's Health and Safety Advisory Committee.

A landmark concussion settlement with past players - worth a potential $1billion - was reached in April, but could be delayed after former player Craig Heimburger filed an appeal.

"Can I see a time without helmets? Yes," Dr John York - co-chairman of the San Francisco 49ers - is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"It's not around the corner, but I can see it."

Although helmet to helmet contact is banned, many experts believe players wearing helmets are more likely to lead with their heads going into contact.

It's a trend that has significantly contributed to the number of concussions in the game.

Hayne, who has played his whole life without a helmet, would have a huge advantage over American players who would be forced to make massive adjustments.

With helmets removed from the game, technique and timing will become significantly more important.

While the rest of the league is learning how to change, Hayne's NRL background means he will be ready to go.

It could be the difference between being a bit-part fringe player, or a starting running-back.
