Milos Raonic upset Rafael Nadal at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday, progressing to a semi-final date with Roger Federer.

Sixth seed Raonic beat Nadal for the first time in his career, saving three match points in the second-set tie-break to prevail 4-6 7-6 (12-10) 7-5 in just under three hours at Indian Wells.

Third seed Nadal would rue five break-point chances in the second set, and also three opportunities to claim the match in the tie-break - although the Canadian's booming serve set him up to save all three.

Raonic only had four break-points for the contest, and he finally cracked the Nadal serve with a well-timed lob in the 11th game of the third set - one the Mallorcan could not retrieve.

Raonic's first win in six meetings with Nadal sends him into a clash with Federer - the result denying the tennis world a meeting of the two rivals, who have already played 33 times on the ATP World Tour.

Instead, Raonic will meet Federer for a 10th time, having only beaten the Swiss 17-time major winner once previously.

Second seed Federer had a simpler time of his quarter-final in California, dismantling ninth seed Tomas Berdych 6-4 6-0.

Federer lost only eight points on serve and did not give Berdych a look at a break point, with the Czech broken four times - landing his first serve only 46 per cent of the time.

Raonic is aiming to reach his third Masters-level final, and second in succession after losing to Novak Djokovic in the Paris decider in November.

The Canadian defeated Federer on his way to the final in France, but the Swiss has responded with two wins over Raonic since.

Federer is aiming to match Nadal's record-setting 40 Masters final appearances, with the Swiss on 39 - having won 23 of them.
