Pistorius, 30, was taken to Kalafong Hospital on Thursday and was expected to return to prison that same day, according to a department of corrections spokesperson, but the staff decided to keep him overnight.
Family spokesman Johan van Wyk denied initial reports that Pistorius had suffered a heart attack.
“He’s fine now,” van Wyk told The Associated Press, though he declined to go into further detail about Pistorius' medical condition.
It's the second time Pistorius has left prison to go to the hospital. Last year he received treatments after he sustained cuts to his wrists, which he said were the result of a fall in his cell.
Pistorius is serving a six-year sentence for the 2013 murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. South African prosecutors are in the process of appealing Pistorius' six-year sentence with the intention of having him serve a maximum 15-year sentence.
Pistorius, a double-leg amputee, has won eight Paralympic medals, six of them gold.
