The New York Rangers can secure the Presidents' Trophy on Tuesday after ending the Columbus Blue Jackets' nine-game winning streak in the NHL on Monday.

Derek Stepan levelled the match for the Rangers with just 28 seconds left at Madison Square Garden and scored the winner in overtime to clinch a 4-3 victory against the Blue Jackets.

The win took the Rangers to 109 points from 79 matches and if - as expected - they account for the lowly New Jersey Devils on Tuesday, the New York-based side will clinch the Presidents' Trophy ahead of the Anaheim Ducks (107 from 80) and the Montreal Canadiens (106 from 80).

The Presidents' Trophy winners are granted home advantage in each play-off series they contest.

Columbus had not lost since March 15 and looked set for a 10th consecutive victory after Brandon Dubinsky gave them the lead in the ninth minute of the third period.

But after Stepan equalised late in the third stanza, the 24-year-old centre struck the winning goal in the fifth minute of the extra period, finishing from close range after an assist by Keith Yandle, as the Rangers claimed their fourth straight victory.

The Vancouver Canucks edged closer to clinching a play-off berth as they accounted for the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 following a shoot-out.

The Canucks (95) sit second in the Western Conference's Pacific division behind the Ducks.

The Winnipeg Jets kept fighting for the post-season with a 2-0 triumph at the Minnesota Wild, while Jamie Benn notched a brace in the Dallas Stars' 5-1 win against the San Jose Sharks and the Buffalo Sabres edged out the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3.
