Rafael Nadal showed no signs of rustiness or injury on his way to a straight-sets thrashing of Mikhail Youzhny in the Australian Open first round.

The Spanish third seed, under an injury cloud heading into the year's first grand slam, eased to a 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory on Rod Laver Arena.

The 14-time grand slam winner produced just 15 unforced errors to go with his 37 winners.

He broke serve five times and faced just one break point, which Youzhny failed to convert.

Nadal held an 11-4 win-loss record over the Russian heading into the contest, and that only ever looked likely to become even more one-sided early on.

A passing winner on break point in the fifth game saw Nadal break for a 3-2 lead, and another break to finish the set followed.

Nadal broke to love in the second game of the second set, taking complete control of the contest.

Once more, he took Youzhny's serve to finish the set.

When Youzhny double-faulted in the sixth game of the third set, Nadal was 4-2 up and his victory all-but sealed.

And it was soon after, Nadal coming to the net to put away an easy volley winner.
