Starting the final day of the first Test in the three-match series on 174-8 and trailing by 305 runs, New Zealand were skittled for 231 on Thursday, Ish Sodhi's defiant 63 prolonging the inevitable until he was the last man to fall following an unsuccessful lbw review.

The emphatic victory, which follows a crushing whitewash of Australia, puts Misbah clear of Imran Khan and Javed Miandad as Pakistan's most successful Test captain, having won 15 times in the longest form of the game.

It took Misbah's men just over an hour to get the two wickets required to make it a landmark Test for the 40-year-old.

Yasir Shah (3-74) struck first in just the second over to bowl Mark Craig for 28, which brought Trent Boult to the crease.

Sodhi and Boult (19 not out) ensured New Zealand ended their second innings with a flurry of boundaries as the tourists nudged past the 200 mark.

The impressive Sodhi brought up his half-century with a six off Shah before he eventually succumbed to Imran Khan (2-37).

Rahat Ali finished with match figures of 6-70 to claim the man of the match award and Pakistan will now look to continue their fine form by securing a series win when the second Test gets under way on Monday.
