Czech fourth seed Petra Kvitova said she is better prepared to cope with warm conditions compared to previous years following her 6-2 6-4 win against Mona Barthel on Hisense Arena.
Kvitova put on a clinic in the opening set and got lucky in the second as she reached the third round of the Australian Open in conditions exceeding 34 degrees Celsius in Melbourne.
The weather may have caused a problem for Kvitova in years gone by, but not this time around thanks in part to new trainer Alex Stober, who had previously worked with 2014 Australian Open champion Li Na.
"Even yesterday when I knew today would be warmer than yesterday, I knew that [coach David Kotyza] was a little bit worried," Kvitova told a media conference.
"Me too, of course. I did not say it. But somewhere in myself [it] was there.
"But I knew that I'm prepared better than the years before, I can handle it better.
"I think it was quite warm today and I think I handled quite well. I'm not sure if I can handle it like, for example, if it's last year or two years ago. I'm glad everything went how it was.
"In the end when you are sweaty and the wind is there, it's not that bad."
