Koukash is an outspoken and ambitious Super League figure and has raised Salford's profile considerably over the last year through a number of high-profile signings, including Rangi Chase, Adrian Morley, Francis Meli and Gareth Hock.

The Koukash revolution has led to an instant upturn in the club's fortunes as Salford finished 10th in the 2014 regular season, 12 months after propping up the rest of Super League.

A move for NRL side Newcastle Knights has previously been mooted and Koukash is keen to forge an "international partnership" between Salford and a team in the southern hemisphere.

"I am getting frustrated by the way things are run here in this country," Koukash told the BBC.

"You know, for so long I have been talking about a marquee player and increasing the salary cap etc. And people seem sad that we're never going to make it happen.

"It's nice to see what's happening in the NRL and nice the possibility of being involved with a team there.

"Currently I’m in discussions and it's going really, really well with at least a couple of the clubs over there and hopefully something will happen pretty soon."

Asked about the chances of owning an NRL side, Koukash added: "Is it likely? It's very, very likely.

"But it needs to be the right deal for me personally, for the club in Australia and for my vision of what I'm trying to create - an international partnership for Salford and an NRL club."

Koukash's wife Mandy failed in a bid to become the new Bradford Bulls owner in March.
