Pakistan paceman Mohammad Irfan has been ruled out of the remainder of the Cricket World Cup after scans revealed a stress fracture in his pelvis.

Irfan, who opens Pakistan's bowling, picked up eight wickets in five matches, but Misbah-ul-Haq's men enter their quarter-final against Australia on Friday minus the towering left-armer.

After scans on Monday came back inconclusive, team physiotherapist Brad Robinson ordered a closer inspection of the problem area on Tuesday - with the secondary scans showing Irfan was suffering from a stress fracture.

An official statement from the Pakistan Cricket Board claimed they will not name a replacement player until after their clash with the co-hosts in Sydney.

Right-armer Ehsan Adil already replaced Irfan - who missed their final Pool B clash with Ireland due to a quad injury - and looks set to keep his spot to play Australia.

Adil, 22, has played just five ODIs, and picked up 1-31 in his World Cup debut.
