Holder hopeful as Gayle resumes training image

West Indies batsman Chris Gayle is back training and will be given until Saturday to prove his fitness for his team's Cricket World Cup quarter-final against New Zealand.

The explosive left-hander is battling a back injury and missed West Indies' six-wicket win over United Arab Emirates on Sunday.

Captain Jason Holder confirmed on Friday that Gayle, who made 215 against Zimbabwe on February 24, was back training.

"Chris is at training this morning. Obviously he's had an injection and the scan didn't show anything major," Holder told a media conference.

"We'll see how he pulls up today and make a decision tomorrow morning."

Holder is confident West Indies can overcome New Zealand in Wellington even if Gayle is unable to play.

But the 23-year-old paceman would love to have his opener fit and available.

"Chris' stats speak for themselves. He's one of the most feared batsmen in world cricket," Holder said.

"To have Chris in my squad is a plus for anybody in a sense. To have him there, just his presence alone is felt.

"We just hope he can perform the way he's known to perform over the years and we get the best out of him."
