Almost a decade after her last grand slam title, Martina Hingis collected number 16 with a mixed doubles win alongside Leander Paes at the Australian Open.

The 34-year-old Swiss combined with Paes to overcome third seeds Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor 6-4 6-3 in the final on Sunday.

Hingis is a five-time singles champion - the last of those coming at the 1999 Australian Open.

She has nine doubles majors and now two mixed crowns, both of the latter coming at Melbourne Park.

Hingis hailed her partnership with Paes, saying they grew as the tournament went on.

"I think we even grew with every match, the confidence, the teamwork, the suggestions we had, one or the other, we really trust each other," she said.

"I think that was the key in every match.

"The big points, like today, we were up a break in the first, in the second. Then they break me back. Then I was like, OK. But stay there, be focused, just do our job.

"That was really the key, that we were always there. I think that's our strength, from both of us."

Hingis' first grand slam victory was in the doubles at Wimbledon in 1996, before her maiden singles crown at the Australian Open the following year.
