Leigh Halfpenny produced an unerring display to help Toulon outlast Leinster in a thrilling 25-20 extra-time victory and book an all-French European Champions Cup final against Clermont Auvergne.
The Wales international was involved in a ding-dong kicking battle against the equally superb Ian Madigan in Sunday's semi-final at the Stade Velodrome.
But it was Halfpenny who kicked 20 of the Top 14 champions' points, compared to 15 from the boot of Madigan, to edge his side in front.
A breakaway score from Bryan Habana at the end of the first period of extra time seemingly took the game away from Leinster.
The Irish side refused to lie down, though, and Sean O'Brien's try set up a tense finale.
But, just as in the 2014 Heineken Cup quarter-finals, it was Toulon who triumphed and they will now attempt to win a historic third consecutive European cup.
The hosts thought they had made a blistering start when Leinster made a hash of a Frederic Michalak kick into the in-goal area and Chris Masoe pounced to touch down, only for the television match official to rule he was offside.
Play was taken back for a Toulon penalty, though, and Halfpenny scored the first points of the match.
Leinster recovered from the sloppy opening and their sustained pressure resulted in Madigan knocking over three penalties.
Much like Clermont's win over Saracens, there were few try-scoring opportunities - but Toulon finished the half stronger and the reliable Halfpenny reduced the deficit to three by the interval.
In the battle between the kickers it was Halfpenny who blinked first when he forced a difficult penalty wide from the left touchline in the 47th minute, but he made amends to tie the game from his next effort.
It was Madigan's turn to miss next, before he and Halfpenny once more traded kicks to take the scores to 12-12.
In the closing stages Madigan narrowly missed a drop goal, while Steffon Armitage sent an ambitious attempt from the tee short and wide for Toulon.
That brought extra time and Toulon were reduced to 14 men for 10 minutes when Ali Williams was sin-binned for taking out Devin Toner in the air
The numerical advantage made no difference, though, and Halfpenny's penalty put Toulon in front before Habana capitalised on a poor Madigan pass to race clear for the first try of the game.
O'Brien drove over the line inside the final three minutes, but Jimmy Gopperth's conversion hit the post and Toulon held on to win an enthralling contest.
