After the weather had curtailed the afternoon action on Tuesday, Scott stormed to the front when racing resumed on Wednesday to seize the early advantage in the overall standings.

The Weymouth sailor was untouchable in the blue fleet, while countryman Edward Wright claimed double victory in the yellow fleet to mount his own challenge, having failed to finish the first race of the day.

In the Laser, Philipp Buhl's assault on the leaderboard continued on day six.

Having claimed a double 'bullet' - the sailing term for a race victory - on Tuesday to narrow the gap at the top of the standings, he was in contention once again.

Australian Matthew Wearn enjoyed his best performance of the regatta so far as he held off the German by eight seconds to win, but Buhl's second, combined with a seventh-placed finish for another Australian, Tom Burton, meant that the latter's lead at the head of the standings was trimmed again.

Evi Van Acker made up ground in the Laser Radial standings - coming from sixth at the first marker to win Wednesday's sailing, with overall pacesetter Marit Bouwmeester only able to finish 12th.

And Julien Bontemps claimed a pair of victories in RS:X windsurfer to strengthen his medal claims.

After a rest day on Tuesday, the women's RS:X saw Zofia Noceti-Klepacka make her move, sandwiching two victories with an eighth-place finish in race seven to take a grip on second overall, although Frenchwoman Charline Picon's consistency saw her claim three third places and a solid lead atop the standings.

Greek duo Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis won the only race of the day in the men's 470 class to seize the momentum from the United States' Stuart Mcnay and David Hughes, while in the women's competition, Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar bounced back from a disappointing showing on Tuesday to take the bullet and maintain their control of the class.

New Zealand's Peter Burling and Blair Tuke claimed first and fourth-place finishes to cement their 10-point net lead in the 49er class and Charlotte Dobson and Sophie Ainsworth of Great Britain bounced back from disqualification in race two of the 49erFX to win on Wednesday and re-ignite their challenge.

There was no racing in the Nacara 17 class, with French duo Billy Besson and Marie Riou still heading the standings.
