Simona Halep maintained her promising start to the Australian Open by swiftly dispatching Jarmila Gajdosova 6-2 6-2 in the second round on Wednesday.

In complete contrast to the preceding match in the Rod Laver Arena that saw men's world number three Rafael Nadal survive a four-hour marathon, third seed Halep wasted little time securing her spot in the next round at the expense of the Australian after 66 minutes on court.

She will face American Bethanie Mattek-Sands for a place in the fourth round.

Halep - yet to win a Grand Slam - enjoyed a breakout year in 2014, reaching the French Open final, while enjoying impressive runs at both Wimbledon (semi-final) and the Australian Open (quarter-final).

Her performances yielded a berth at the season-ending WTA Championships.

At 23 years of age, Halep may be ready to make the next step and she showed no mercy in a polished performance.

Gajdosova dropped serve in the very first game, with three unforced errors leading to the Australian's demise.

She was broken again in the fifth game as Halep raced away with the opening set, which was sealed by an ace.

It was a similar story in the second set, with two break points enough to see Halep, who had a serving success rate of 79 per cent, through in comprehensive fashion.
