Rory McIlroy begins play Thursday in the Cadillac Championship with a firm grasp on No. 1 in world golf rankings. No. 2 will be up for grabs.
McIlroy's goal at Trump National Doral in Miami boils down to this: Play better than last week. In his first North American competition of the season, McIlroy missed the cut at The Honda Classic. Padraig Harrington won last week's tournament.

This week's tournament is the World Golf Championship event, and the top 50 players rankings are taking part. That means Bubba Watson, who is No. 2, along with Phil Mickelson and the best Americans. That also mean Sweden's Henrik Stenson, Australia's Jason Day and Adam Scott, England's Justin Rose and Spain's Sergio Garcia.
There are a crew of players above, including Jim Furyk and excluding Mickelson, who has a chance to jump into the ranking's second position.
And of course, Tiger Woods isn't playing. His injury recovery and quest to find missing elements in his game continue.
Play runs Thursday through Sunday, with first shots scheduled at 11 a.m. No danger, then, of players sleeping late and missing their tee time.
