Jim Furyk came through a play-off against Kevin Kisner to claim his 17th PGA Tour success at the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head.

The world number 10 shot his competition-best 63 on Sunday to put him level with fellow American Kisner before winning through in a play-off to ensure a first tournament win in 100 starts.

Having matched Kisner's birdie at the 18th in the opening hole of the play-off, Furyk went one under at the 17th to beat his opponent's par and ensure success in Carolina.

"I've had to talk about [the lack of a victory] a lot over the years. I can't think of a more fitting place to break that streak and get another win," said Furyk.

"This is my favourite event and outside of another major, this is the perfect place to do it.

"It was pretty simply, the first five holes I really didn't play very well.

"I felt like I was two over but I was two under. I got some good breaks early and the putter just stayed hot.

"I started thinking this might just be the day I get into the winner's circle."

Six birdies on the outward nine - including four in a row from the sixth to the ninth - helped Furyk's cause while Kisner remained in contention thanks partly to an eagle at the 502-yard second.

Overnight leader Troy Merritt failed to stay ahead of the pack despite carding a two-under round of 69.

That was enough to put him third while Masters champion Jordan Spieth slipped three places to tied 11th in his first outing since claiming a maiden career major at Augusta.

Having initially erased memories of his opening-round 74, Spieth's scores gradually crept back up following Friday's 62 as he went round in 70 on the final day's play.

Brendon Tood, Matt Kuchar and Sean O'Hair completed an all-American top six.
