A delighted David Ferrer is eyeing the 2016 Olympic Games after his success in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

The Spaniard thrashed Italian Fabio Fognini 6-2 6-3 in the Rio Open final, clinching his second title of the year.

Ferrer, 32, said the Rio Games were likely to be his last – and he is looking forward to returning to the Brazilian city in August next year.

"I want to come back to Rio next year, definitely," he said.

"The Olympic Games would be a great aim for me as it would be my third one and perhaps my last one, but there is plenty of time until then, so I want to enjoy it step by step.

"The tournament has been special the whole week due to all the things I have experienced and because I could clinch a different title. This is always a great motivation.

"I was very happy when I won in Doha as I had never won there before, and it is the same here in Rio as I hadn't managed to win here before."

Ferrer, who remains ninth in the world, is turning his attentions to the Mexican Open starting in Acapulco on Monday.

He is a three-time winner of the tournament but knows the challenge ahead of him as he switches from clay to hard courts.

"I am happy because I have started the year very well, I've won two tournaments out of three," Ferrer said.

"Now my focus is just on Acapulco, where I am going to play on a fast court, so I want to be focused on the next challenge.

"Obviously, I am happy. Whenever you win it is a reason to be happy and more so when you get a victory that you couldn't get before, like me here in Rio.

"It's also been a great experience here, especially with the carnival. I will enjoy today but quickly focus on Acapulco."
