Australian surfer Mick Fanning has returned to the water, less than a week after a close encounter with a shark in South Africa.
The 34-year-old survived a brush with death, when a shark swam at Fanning - who was competing in the J-Bay Open final at Jeffreys Bay on Sunday.
Back home at Tweed Heads, New South Wales, Fanning returned to the open water with board in hand - posting a photo of himself by the shoreside on Instagram, which had received over 40,000 likes.
Fanning also paid tribute to the late Andy Irons, who died in 2010 - and would have celebrated his 37th birthday on Saturday.
"First surf back. Feels so good. Surfed by myself but had Andy in my thoughts. Happy Birthday brother #Alforever," Fanning's post read.
