Footage of an Oregon steeplechaser's early celebration at a college meet has gone viral, with Tanguy Pepiot the master of his own downfall.

Competing at the Pepsi Team Invitational in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday, Pepiot - representing the hosts - was storming clear in the home straight of the 3000 metres steeplechase.

So confident was Pepiot of victory, he began to egg on the crowd to cheer for him - however, Washington's Meron Simon had other ideas.

Simon, spotting Pepiot's premature elation, stormed home to beat him at the finish line, winning in a time of eight minutes, 57.86 seconds - 0.1secs ahead of a stunned Pepiot.

Whether you think he was 'pepped' at the post or it was an early crow gone wrong, one feels Pepiot will think twice about jumping the gun in the future.
