Novak Djokovic booked his place in the Australian Open semi-finals with a comprehensive win over Milos Raonic on Wednesday.

The Serbian world number one is on track for an eighth grand slam title after a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 6-2 victory over Raonic on Rod Laver Arena.

Djokovic was rarely challenged on his serve and his return game got better as the quarter-final went on, setting up a blockbuster clash with Stan Wawrinka.

In the end, it was Djokovic's serve that proved the key – Canadian eighth seed Raonic won just 12 receiving points.

Djokovic broke serve three times and hit 33 winners in a comfortable victory.

Raonic's serving was always going to be crucial to his chances, but it was put under pressure in just the second game.

He saved a break point with a big serve out wide, and a second with a 226km/h ace down the tee, on his way to a tough hold.

Djokovic had looked more comfortable than Raonic on serve, and he overcame his toughest test by holding from 0-30 down in the seventh game.

Raonic needed a pair of big serves to save break points in the eighth game, having put himself in trouble with two forehands into the net.

With Djokovic failing to take his chances and Raonic rarely threatening, a tie-break was always likely.

Djokovic almost gave up a 6-3 lead in the tie-break, but Raonic sent a cross-court forehand well wide on the third set point.

It marked his 19th unforced error of the set.

Perhaps still dwelling on the disappointment of dropping a 55-minute first set, Raonic was broken in the first game of the second after a ripping cross-court backhand pass by Djokovic.

Sensing an opportunity, Djokovic's intensity lifted – but Raonic's serve meant there was no chance of a run-away second set.

But there was still minimal to no pressure on the Djokovic serve, and he completed a comfortable set with an overhead smash and love hold.

His biggest scare was falling in the opening game of the third set, and he broke serve for 2-1 after Raonic pulled a forehand cross-court wide.

Another break of serve followed and Djokovic's win was complete with a fine volley backhand winner, setting up a mouth-watering clash against Wawrinka – a repeat of last year's quarter-final clash which the Swiss emerged victorious from in a four-hour epic.
