College football rankings: Will we see another major upset in Week 2? image

Howard and Liberty made headlines with their upsets against UNLV and Baylor, respectively, in Week 1 of the 2017 college football season.

Those viral upsets hid a real trend in college football: When it comes to teams ranked in the AP Top 25, the gap between the Power 5 and Group of 5 shows. That's in the numbers.

In Week 1, Power 5 schools ranked among the top 25 were a perfect 11-0 against either Group of 5 or FCS schools. There wasn't an upset, but there also weren't many close games. The lowest margin of victory was USC's 49-31 victory against Western Michigan.

The average margin of victory in eight games against the Group of 5 was 38.9 points per game, more than the amount from three games against FCS opponents, which was 31.7 points per game.

That's 38.9 points per game? Four of those Group of 5 opponents were beaten by more than 40 points. Clemson and Penn State beat Kent State and Akron, respectively, by a combined score of 108-3. Oklahoma and Wisconsin beat UTEP and Utah State by 49 points apiece.

Group of 5 schools need to beat a Power 5 team to get the attention of the College Football Playoff committee, and that leads us to Week 2. South Florida remains the only Group of 5 team ranked in the top 25, and there are 13 chances for either a Group of 5 school or FCS school to knock out a top 25 team.
