Darren Clarke would "love" to be European captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National, as a decision on the next skipper appears close to being announced.
Clarke has enjoyed vast success as a player in the biennial tournament and was part of winning European teams in 1997, 2002, 2004 and 2006.
The Northern Irishman is the favourite to take over from Paul McGinley, who led Europe to a third straight victory over United States at Gleneagles last September.
Europe's Ryder Cup team announced on their official Twitter account that a selection panel is to meet on Wednesday to discuss the next captain.
And Clarke, who previously admitted it was a two-horse race between himself and Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, would relish the opportunity.
"If it's Miguel, I would be delighted for him, but I would love to do the job," Clarke told BBC Northern Ireland.
"To be the captain is huge, but he is only there to steer the players. It's not about the captain, it's about the team.
"I've got very, very special memories of the event and I'm fortunate to have played in many winning teams. Those memories I will cherish for ever."
