Second seed Roger Federer's fourth-round match against Gael Monfils at the French Open is level at one-set all, after fading light halted play on Sunday.

Rain delays caused disruption to the schedule earlier in the day, delaying the arrival of the 17-time major winner Federer and local favourite Monfils onto Court Philippe Chatrier.

Federer needed just 29 minutes to wrap up the first set 6-3, but he struggled on serve in the second as the Frenchman fought his way back into contention at the clay-court major.

Monfils - who has beaten Federer in their past two meetings - broke for a 2-0 lead in the second set with a rasping forehand, only for 2009 champion Federer to earn the break back in the ninth game after a delicious drop-shot.

But 13th seed Monfils hit straight back to win the set 6-4 and level the match before bad light brought a premature end to the evening in Paris.

The winner of that match will face Stan Wawrinka after the eighth seed took less than two hours to see off French number one and 12th seed Gilles Simon 6-1 6-4 6-2.

Kei Nishikori remained on course to become the first Japanese player since Jiro Sato in 1933 to reach the semi-finals as he proved too strong for Teymuraz Gabashvili in a 6-3 6-4 6-2 victory on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

The fifth seed was dumped out in the first round 12 months ago, but he will now contest the quarter-finals for the first time in his career.

Standing in his way of a last-four berth is 14th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who delighted the home fans by dispatching of fourth seed Tomas Berdych 6-3 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-3.

Frenchman Tsonga, who dropped a set for the first time this tournament, had Berdych - a former semi-finalist at Roland Garros - on the back foot for the majority of the match and deservedly progressed to the last eight.

Speaking after his win, Tsonga said: "I'm feeling good. I'm playing good tennis. When I play my best tennis, I know I'm able to beat many guys.

"So even if the last couple of months was tough, I always believed in myself. I continue to work hard and try to be really consistent in my head."
