Andy Murray gets Abu Dhabi title gift as Novak Djokovic forfeits; shoulder is question image

In the most anticlimactic elite tennis match in recent memory, Andy Murray won Saturday's Mubadala World Tennis Championship in a walkover. Novak Djokovic, the world's No. 1 player, withdrew from the tournament final because of illness.

"I've been sick today with a fever and I'm not fit to play," Djokovic said.

Murray has a health problem of his own. He will be examined to determine the severity of a shoulder injury from the Abu Dhabi tournament's semifinal.

"I'm going to have an ultrasound scan to check and see if there's anything there or not then I'll see what happens after that," he said.

Saturday's surprise came after Djokovic dismantled Stan Wawrinka in Friday's semifinal match. It denied Murray a chance to follow up on his strong semifinal victory over Rafael Nadal.

Murray said he had shoulder soreness while dispatching Nadal 6-2, 6-0. Nadal continues to rehab from injuries and follow-up treatments that laid him low late last year.

"I don't know exactly what happened. I've never had anything happen to my left shoulder before," Murray said at Saturday's trophy presentation.

"It's pretty sore and at the end of the match when I was reaching out to sign autographs it was quite painful.

"I'm going to have an ultrasound scan to check and see if there's anything there or not then I'll see what happens after that."

It's not clear when Djokovic developed the fever that forced him to forfeit the title match.

Neither is it certain Murray will be able to compete in Monday's opening match of the Hopman Cup competition. Murray is expected to pair with Heather Watson in France in the mixed team event.
