American Coco Vandeweghe pulls surprise in Australian Open image

Coco Vandeweghe joined Thursday's winners in advancing in the Australian Open. She delivered a blow to Aussie tennis fans by eliminating former U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-4.

Among other winners Thursday:

— Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova over Germany's Mona Barthel 6-2, 6-4. Next: Madison Keys of the United States. Keys eliminated 29th-seeded Casey Dellacqua 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

— Former Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska over Sweden's Johanna Larsson 6-0, 6-1. Next up: Varvara Lepchenko. Seeded No. 30, Lepchenko defeated Ajla Tomljanovic 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).

— Venus Williams over fellow American Lauren Davis 6-2, 6-3. Venus is 7-0 this year with a tournament title in Auckland, New Zealand. Next up: Italy's Camila Giorgi.

— Dominika Cibulkova, seeded 11th, over Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 6-0.

— Alize Cornet over Denisa Allertova 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-2

— Garbine Muguruza over Daniela Hantuchova 6-1, 1-6, 6-0.

— Barbora Zahlavova Strycova over Kai-Chen Chang 6-1, 7-5.

— Elina Svitolina over American Nicole Gibbs 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6).

— American Madison Brengle over fellow American Irina Falconi 6-1, 6-3. Next: Vandeweghe in the round of 32.

Vandeweghe, 23, is No. 37 in world rankings and among rising American players. She dominated Stosur with her serve.

"This is my first time on Rod Laver Arena and to play Sam, I couldn't ask for a better intro," Vandeweghe said.

"Last year, I lost first round in qualies here, so there's a big difference.

"I was really happy with the way I played.

"I set myself the goal this year to get into the third round of a grand slam. I've done that now."
