French tennis player Alize Cornet is facing a possible ban from the sport after missing three random drug tests, the French Tennis Federation has announced.

The 28-year-old, who is currently ranked 42 in the world, was knocked out of the Australian Open in the third round by semi-finalist, Elise Mertens.

Cornet has been placed under a disciplinary investigation by the International Tennis Federation after receiving a third "no show" from the Anti-Doping Agency in a 12-month period.

The World Anti-Doping Agency rules means Cornet could face a ban of up to two years for missing the tests.

She could reduce her possible ban if she can prove she had legitimate reasons for missing the tests.

Cornet defended herself on social media, claiming she has nothing to hide.

The Frenchwoman reached a career-high ranking of 11 in 2009 and has won five singles titles.

She will not be considered for the French Fed Cup World Group tie against Belgium in February, pending the outcome of the ongoing inquiry.
