Winter Olympics 2018: Earthquake strikes 100 miles from Pyeongchang image

Many athletes at the Winter Olympics were awakened just past 5 a.m. (3 p.m. ET) when an earthquake struck near Pyeongchang.

The quake, which struck about 100 miles away from Pyeongchang near the town of Hoko, measured a 4.8 magnitude. There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries.

That roughly translates as, “4.6 magnitude earthquake on 2.11 at 5:03 5 km to the northwest of Buk-gu, Pohang City, Gyeongbuk, be careful of aftershocks.”

The magnitude was later adjusted to 4.8.

According to the United States Geological Survey, earthquakes in the 4.0 to 4.9 range are considered light. Conditions may include, "Felt indoors by many, outdoors by few during the day. At night, some awakened. Dishes, windows, doors disturbed; walls make cracking sound. Sensation like heavy truck striking building. Standing motor cars rocked noticeably."
